Tyson Hall is a self-proclaimed artist, born in Manhattan
and raised in the Bronx, New York. He was born amidst the hip-hop
culture evolution that took place in the late 70's, early 80's.
He chose graffiti as his art form because he could always find
a medium to express himself, "I'd use the nearest wall,
scrap paper, virtually anything that would allow me to project
an image."
As time brought about change graffiti became less of an interest
and drawing became a habit, but there was no interest in painting.
In 1992, Tyson registered for an art class at John Jay
College to fulfill an elective requirement. With an 'A' in the
class and still not recognizing his full potential he continued
to pursue his acting career. While working on the set of an
independent film, a fellow actor suggested he see "Basquiat".
Inspired by the film on the life and art of Jean-Michel Basquiat,
Tyson purchased his first piece of canvas and began to
paint. At this time he gave unity to his graffiti and drawing.
Graffiti involved characterizations, which Tyson embraced;
his drawing tendencies often resulted in similar life images.
Out of this his faces were born, consequently so was his abstract
painting style.
"The images drawn and painted are already in existence
but aren't visible to the human eye. I give the vision its visibility-
bringing the truth to light." Painting became a vehicle
for the communication and expression of Tyson's spirituality,
culture and values. As an abstract artist he also enjoys expressing
contrasting views and life opinions. His art conveys revolutionary
themes, addresses social forces and their influence on the community.
The goal of the artist is to express and convey a message to
the viewer. The importance of appreciating the beauty within
individuality is the message that this artist sends. Because
he respects the beauty of others uniqueness, Tyson has
shared his artwork in unique ways. He has donated pieces for
auction to New York City museums and has also used his artwork
as a vehicle for motivational speaking to audiences from all
over the country. His passion is speaking to and inspiring children.
This has brought him to exposing inner city children to art.
He has done so as he feels that children should set goals for
what they wish to do instead of what the world predicts.
